April 2006 - PRESS RELEASE CARE ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF AN AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT TRAINING COURSE CARE is pleased to announce that its training course dedicated to helping staff at Authorised Treatment Facilities (ATF’s) assess and safely deal with airbags and other potential pyrotechnic devices (seatbelt pre-tensioners etc) is now available for booking. The course, developed and delivered by Jema Associates Ltd, takes a risk assessment based approach to meeting the requirement of the ELV Directive that airbags must be neutralised or removed as part of the depollution process. The one-day course gives delegates a classroom session in the morning where information sources, airbag types, deployment equipment and methods are discussed. A practical session follows in the afternoon where delegates can put it all into practice and will get the chance to deploy several types of airbags. Pilot sessions have involved DTI and industry associations, giving stakeholder input. “Feedback has been very good and supportive of this initiative” said Peter Stokes, Chairman of CARE. “Pyrotechnic devices are currently more prevalent in the UK dismantling community than elsewhere in Europe as fewer old cars are exported, therefore I’m pleased that those manufacturers involved in CARE chose to instigate and fund the creation of a training course to deal with them”. Duncan Wemyss, Secretary of the Motor Vehicle Dismantlers Association said he was “delighted to support an important initiative helping raise standards in the vehicle recycling industry, particularly as the emphasis is on operator safety”. Alan Greenouff, Chairman and Secretary General of the British Vehicle Salvage Federation echoed these comments saying that “The manufacturers within CARE had reacted positively to an issue raised by recycling industry and this is most welcome”. Christopher Macgowan, Chief Executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders added, "Manufacturers must be just as committed to the safety of those dismantling cars as we are to delivering targets under the end of life vehicles directive. That's why this course has our full support." Lindsay Millington, Director General of the British Metals Recycling Association added ‘The course is reasonably priced, and provides ATFs with the knowledge they need to understand both risks and appropriate procedures. We have already publicised the course to our members.’ Further details on the course and how to book are available on the CARE website. November 2005 - PRESS RELEASE SETTING THE STANDARDS AT DONCASTER MOTOR SPARES One of the UK's leading Independent Salvage Dealers and Vehicle Dismantlers, Doncaster Motor Spares has become one of the first Authorised Treatment Facilities (ATF) in the UK to have achieved recognition by CARE (Consortium for Automotive Recycling) as having successfully adopted its Operational Management System (OMS). Doncaster Motor Spares based at Askern Road, Doncaster, has also achieved the international environmental standard ISO 14001:2004 using the CARE approved Operational Management System as a pathway. The system has been developed by CARE in conjunction with IAC (Institute Assessment & Certification) and certification is given to waste treatment centres that have demonstrably committed to provide a high level of service to a certain standard. This includes a commitment to develop and improve the day-to-day operation of every aspect of the business, with particular emphasis on compliance with environmental legislation and quality of service to its customers. The assessment of Doncaster Motor Spares and their certification was carried out by IAC, its Operations Director, Steven Townsend said: "The new CARE Operational Management System adopted by Doncaster Motor Spares is a fully integrated but simplified system that managers can use as a tool to help them improve their businesses. In order to meet stringent requirements, the company has to have a clearly defined commitment to its customers and to the environment and must consistently follow the agreed processes to ensure this is delivered. Achieving this award has to be good news for Doncaster Motor Spares customers." Richard Martin, Managing Director at Doncaster Motor Spares said: "We are delighted to be among the first ATF's in the country to have received this accolade. We pride ourselves on being an environmentally focused business, and have put a lot of effort into achieving this standard. Our customers will take confidence in the fact that our status as a CARE OMS recognised operator reflects our on-going commitment, not only to the environment and ensuring full compliance with legislation, but ultimately to provide our customers with the best possible service." Peter Stokes, chairman of the CARE Group said "We worked for many months to develop a product which allows an ATF the opportunity to take an "off the shelf" route to developing towards ISO certification. The systems need only to be tailored to the individual business since the main development was carried out with ATF's and therefore the package reflects their type of businesses and circumstances. It's great to see the work we put in, come to fruition and we look forward to more facilities adopting the OMS.
